The Donut Man
Happy Friday my sweets! Since the weekend is starting I’d like to tell you about one my favorite weekend destinations – The Donut Man in Glendora. Here’s an interesting fact: Did you know that Los Angeles has the highest per capita number of donut shops of any metropolitan area in the United States? Also the proper spelling of “donut” is “doughnut.” I wanted to point that out because today I’m going to use the spelling “donut” because I like the way it looks and it’s shorter so don’t get on to me about using this spelling. I’m a rebel, dang it!
Now with that out of the way, being that there are so many donut shops in LA county you can’t help but notice a donut shop that’s doing it a little bit different. The Donut Man has been in business since 1972 and is like a landmark in Glendora, a donut mecca if you will. One of the most amazing things about Donut Man are their seasonal donuts. In addition to your classic donut shapes and flavors, the Donut Man has 5 signature seasonal flavors – strawberry, peach, peanut butter, pumpkin and cream puff. I didn’t know that peanut butter and cream puffs had a season but if they do then those are my favorite seasons. The Donut Man is especially famous for their strawberry and peach donuts that really are only available, well seasonally. Actually, last year I had been waiting for them to come out with their peach donut but there was an issue with last year’s peach crop and the peach donuts never came in season =( I’m crossing my fingers for this year! The Donut Man is a stickler for the quality of the fruits that they use which only means that when you get one of these fruit filled gems they are going to be as fresh as fresh can be! Also, do you see the size of these strawberries in this donut!? It’s heavenly! Next time you’re in Glendora you HAVE to stop by the Donut Man and if you never find your self near Glendora then you just have to go out there. It is definitely worth it, I promise! Also, did you know we sell donut earrings, donut rings and donut cufflinks in the Little Sweet Thing Shop!? Look at these donut-licious things!
Below are some more drool-worthy pictures of Donut Man donuts. Mmmmm, donuts…

My Top 5 Disneyland Desserts

5. Caramel Apples
Now, even though these are farther away from my number 1 Disneyland dessert, the artistry of the caramel apples around the park are not to be dismissed. Disney is great at creating so many different types of caramel apples that you can’t help but want to collect them! The problem is that they are perishable so you can’t! I’ve seen the standard Mickey and Minnie caramel apples but I’ve also seen some awesome ones like a Cheshire cat apple, bunny apples, pumpkin apples and even a rainbow apple.
4. Churros
Imagine this – you’re walking around Disneyland, you’re tired, it’s crowded, you’re about to kill the people that are in your party because they don’t want to take a break and your feet are killing you and all of a sudden you smell it – the churro cart and everything melts away. All of a sudden you realize – “Hey, I’ll tell my friends it’s churro time!” After they oblige you’ve got an awesome Disneyland treat AND a reason to sit down and take a break! You can’t beat the churros at Disneyland. It’s not like they are a ton better than ones you can get outside of the park, but because you are in the park they do seem better. Also, some of the churro carts in the park offer dipping sauces like chocolate!
3. Mickey Ice Cream Bar
Ice cream shaped like Mickey – this is one of my favorite Disneyland summer treats! What’s great about most of the ice cream treat stands around the park is that they have a 3-D display of the ice cream novelties that you can buy. It’s always nice to have a visual of what you are about to eat like when you go to the Japanese food court at Mitsuwa (It’s a Southern California reference if you’re unfamiliar). This is a classic Disneyland dessert at it’s finest.
2. Mickey Shaped Beignets
Ummm, hello, fried dough + powdered sugar + Mickey mouse shapes = Smiles! I think the Mickey Mouse beignets at Cafe Orleans are one of the most unique things about Disneyland park. I mean, how do you get them that shape? Do they have a special cutter to do that? I almost want to stage (aka intern) in their kitchen just to learn how to make them. They are perfection.
1. Dole Whip
Ahh, and now we’ve come to my number one Disneyland dessert. I’m listing the Dole Whip as my number one treat mainly for nostalgic reasons. You can find the Dole Whip at the Dole Whip shack in front of the Tiki Tiki Room. The Tiki Tiki Room is one my parents favorite attractions at the park so getting a Dole Whip and watching the show always reminds me of family (Ohana). You are even welcome to enjoy your Dole Whip treat during the Tiki Tiki Room show but please, don’t throw it at the animatronics or I will hunt you down and kill you =)
And now, a little blast from the past – Fantasia Ice Cream
Now, I did tell you that I would share with you one more Disneyland dessert treat that is sadly no longer with us – Fantasia Ice Cream (super sad face!!). Back in the day, Disneyland’s main ice cream sponsor was Carnation Ice Cream. Carnation created an ice cream flavor ONLY available at Disneyland in CA and later at Disney California Adventures. This ice cream flavor was a color extravaganza with Banana, Pistachio and Cherry ice creams! It was almost like a rainbow sherbert without the sherbert and a taste similar to spumoni without the chocolate. Unfortunately, Carnation (which was later taken over by Nestle) was replaced by Dreyers and they felt there was not much demand for the flavor and the recipe has been lost to the public forever. You can recreate the flavor at Cold Stone Creamery, kind of, but of course it is nothing like the original. One of my life’s goals is to get this back in the park. If anyone who reads this has any incite on this lost gem please email me!
And there you have it, my top 5 Disneyland Desserts! What are yours?
Frank and Son Collectible Show
Imagine this, a place where you can let your nerd flag fly freely. A place where you are transported to a comic book convention every Saturday (and Wednesday!). A place where you can find that toy you lost so long ago because your classmate or cousin stole it behind your back when you were kids and now the mere sight of it brings tears to your eyes. Well my friends, if this place sounds like what you’ve been looking for your whole life then welcome to the Frank and Son Collectible Show.If you are a collector of most things than this place will not disappoint. At Frank and Son there are dozens of vendors that buy and sell comic books, toys, baseball cards, sports memorabilia, Disney pins, video games, barbie dolls, Japanese imports, etc. It really is like going to the San Diego Comic Con but on a smaller scale with slightly better parking. Walking down the aisles is like walking down memory lane. At times I’ve seen barbies that I’ve grown up with in addition to collectible toys that were sold out as soon as they were released.
Most recently I’ve seen this gem and am kicking myself at this moment for not buying it on the spot. Hopefully when I go back it’ll be there:
In addition to the toys of your past, present and future, Frank and Son also hold signings for sports, TV, Film, and Comic book stars. Look who’s showing up next week!:
If you are a lover and collector of all things awesome you definitely have to check out the Frank and Son Collectible Show. Here’s the info you’ll need to get there:Address:
